Marketing is the process of generating leads – or in Internet marketing parlance, traffic – converting them into customers, and satisfying and retaining them as customers, meaning that you get your customers to buy more, and more often from you on an ongoing basis.

As such, in this course you’ll discover how to generate traffic, convert it into customers, and satisfy and retain those customers, using the myriad of powerful marketing methods available to you on the Internet.

Of course, before you do any of that, you’ll first need to understand your target market, as well as your competitors, in order to find a positioning, branding and customer value proposition for each of your products and services, that meets an untapped want among your market. This course will take you through the process of doing exactly that.

Now, you can’t be sure of using all the marketing strategies and tactics available to you without a plan. In fact, you’ll methodically build your Marketing plan session by session as you work through this course.

In each session, you’ll deepen your understanding of how to market your business via the Internet. You’ll become aware of the optimum home based internet marketing business strategies available to you. Then, with each (optional) assignment you’ll complete an essential part of your Marketing Plan, so that by the end of the course you’ll have, at the very least, a comprehensive Marketing Plan you can put it into action straight away and, at the most, several marketing strategies already underway working for you.

  • How to pinpoint and research your target market to uncover what they want that is not being currently provided or provided adequately.
  • How to analyze your competitors and gain an understanding of their positioning, branding, business model and strategy, their products and services, and what opportunities you can pursue that they are not.
  • The importance of positioning, branding and a customer value proposition, and how to establish these for your business, products and services.
  • The most powerful strategies for generating loads of traffic to your website and how to implement those strategies.
  • How to convert as much of your traffic as possible into subscribers and paying customers, using a number of key traffic conversion strategies.
  • How to satisfy and retain customers, and increase the average transaction value and frequency of purchase to increase your sales and profits.
  • Various “offline” strategies you can use to generate and convert traffic, and satisfy and retain customers.
  • How to tie everything you’ve learned into a comprehensive and actionable marketing plan.

Course Outline

Session 1: Understanding And Targeting Your Market

In this session, you’ll learn how to thoroughly research your target market. You’ll identify what your prospects want, using primary and secondary research methods – from surveying customers and prospects, to analyzing industry studies, to observing competitors and competitive trends, to using a range of “indirect” data. You’ll discover how to identify wants that are not being met (or met adequately), confirm that enough potential customers want this problem solved, consider the most widely used price points, and even prepare individual customer profiles. You’ll consolidate this data into a detailed profile of your target market. Optional Assignment: Prepare your Target Market Profile.

Session 2: Competitive Analysis

In Session 2, you’ll discover how to identify and analyze the other players in your market. We’ll discuss what you need to know and how to monitor your competition. You’ll learn various techniques to get the “inside scoop” on your competitors and how to compare your business with theirs. You’ll see how to reduce the opportunity for competitors spying on you, and the extent to which you should do so, and what you can do to protect your intellectual property. You’ll also see how to identify potential joint venture partners or affiliates among your competitors. Optional Assignment: Prepare your Competitor Analysis.

Session 3: Positioning, Branding and Unique Selling Proposition

Now that you know all about your market and competition, it’s time to refine your own identity. In this session, you’ll discover what positioning you should aim for, what branding really means and why and how you should brand yourself. You’ll learn the importance of brand consistency in every aspect of your marketing, and indeed, business. After you’re clear on your positioning and branding, you’ll learn about the need for a customer value proposition (“CVP”) and how to clarify the CVP for each of your products and services. Optional Assignment: Establish your positioning, branding and CVP.

Session 4: Generating Traffic Pt 1: Search Engine Optimization (“SEO”)

This session you’ll examine how to generate traffic to your website with a high visibility listing in the popular search engines. We’ll explain the various kinds of search engines and directories and the main ways of being “seen”: getting a high ranking through search engine optimization (“SEO”), paying for a short advertisement (graphical or text) to appear on search engine results pages, and paying for inclusion in a directory. We’ll identify the top search engines to focus on and explain how to get ranked by these search engines… and how not to. You’ll then learn techniques for increasing your ranking – both “on page” techniques and “off page” techniques. Finally, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of hiring an SEO consultant compared with managing your own SEO. Optional Assignment: Plan your SEO strategy.

Session 5: Generating Traffic Pt 2: Pay-Per-Click Advertising and Other Online Advertising

In Session 5, we’ll focus on generating traffic through pay-per-click (“PPC”) advertising on the PPC search engines, primarily Google and Yahoo Search. You’ll work out how to calculate your advertising budget, calculate the value of a visitor to your website, choose the best keywords to bid on, write text ads and graphical ads, prepare appropriate landing pages, and test keywords, ads and landing pages, and keep monitoring and managing your pay-per-click advertising campaigns over time. We’ll then move on to other online advertising opportunities that are available to you – from advertising in newsletters to placing “banner” ads on specific websites and what considerations need to go into doing so. Optional Assignment: Plan your Internet advertising strategy.

Session 6: Generating Traffic Pt 3: Press Releases, Articles and Blogs

This session you’ll discover the power of writing and distributing press releases, articles and blogs. We’ll begin by discussing the dual power of press releases and articles: getting picked up and published by the media… and the search engine optimization (SEO) benefits. Similarly, you’ll see how publishing a blog can have a powerful SEO effect, as well as expanding and deepening your exposure to your target market. Optional Assignment: Plan your press release, article and blog strategy.

Session 7: Generating Traffic Pt 4: Viral Marketing, Linking and “Social Bookmarketing”

In Session 7, you’ll learn about viral marketing and how you can use it to generate traffic to your website. You’ll understand what viral marketing is, and explore various options available to you to implement it in your business. We’ll then discuss how you can accelerate your viral marketing efforts by adding links to the main social bookmark sites and getting inward links from other popular and complementary websites. You’ll recall how inward linking also benefits you from an SEO perspective. Optional Assignment: Plan your viral marketing, linking and “social bookmarketing” strategy.

Session 8: Generating Traffic Pt 5: Joint Ventures and Affiliates

In Session 8, we’ll wrap up our discussion of traffic generation by discussing the power of entering into strategic joint ventures and starting your own affiliate program. Firstly, you’ll see how marketing joint ventures (MJVs) work, the differences between MJVs and other kinds of joint ventures, the different applications of MJVs and the typical use of MJVs by Internet marketers. You’ll then learn who is an ideal MJV partner for you – you’ll discover “who” has your prospects and customers – and when and how to approach them: how to develop an attractive enough proposal and whether to “buy” or “build” a relationship with someone. We’ll then move on to discuss the “mass market” form of MJVs – running your own affiliate program. You’ll learn the necessary elements of an affiliate program, the different kinds of programs you can run, the tools you’ll need to manage it properly, when to launch an affiliate program, and how to manage it on an ongoing basis. Optional Assignment: Plan your strategy for establishing joint ventures and an affiliate program.

Session 9: Converting Leads Into Customers Pt 1: Copywriting and Website Design

This session we’ll shift gears and focus on converting all that traffic you’re getting into subscribers to your mailing list and customers. We’ll discuss the general principles of persuading people to take any given action through the design of your website as a whole, a given webpage, and your copywriting. We’ll explore the various kinds of “landing pages” you might use to generate your “most wanted response” (MWR) such as “name squeeze” pages or salesletter pages. You’ll discover that direct conversions are not your only – and maybe not your most important – goal, which is instead building your mailing list. You’ll appreciate the power of capturing physical contact information and using free offers to entice people to give you their contact information. You’ll identify the key marketing metrics to monitor your conversions and how to implement a procedure for innovating, testing and tracking on an ongoing basis. Optional Assignment: Prepare your website and copywriting strategy.

Session 10: Converting Leads Into Customers Pt 2: Relationship Building

In Session 10, you’ll appreciate the importance of building a relationship with your prospects as a means of converting them into customers. Your primary tool for doing this is via email marketing: using autoresponders, email newsletters and/or tips, and email promotions to build likeability, trust and ultimately prospects buying from you. You’ll discover the various approaches you can use, and identify when and how often you should send your emails. You’ll also see how teleseminars and audio and video recordings can build your relationships and generate sales, as well as writing a blog, and hosting your own forum. Optional Assignment: Prepare your relationship building strategy.

Session 11: Satisfying, Retaining and Increasing Purchase Value and Frequency

In this session, you’ll discover the importance of satisfying your customers. Surprisingly little attention is given to satisfying your customers, yet it’s the key to achieving high profitability and building a self-sustaining home based internet marketing business. We’ll discuss what you must do to meet, and exceed your customers’ expectations. Then we’ll talk about retaining a customer, which is really about getting people who’ve bought once from you, to buy more and more frequently. This isn’t just a matter of providing quality products and excellent customer service; in this session you’ll discover a number of tactics to increase your average transaction value and the frequency of purchase. Optional Assignment: Prepare your plan for satisfying and retaining customers.

Session 12: Offline Strategies and Your Marketing Plan

You’ll complete this course by looking at the various “offline” strategies available to you to generate leads, convert them into customers, and satisfy, retain and build relationships with those customers. We’ll look at advertising, publicity, writing articles, speaking at seminars, networking, and joint ventures. Finally, you’ll pull everything you’ve learned throughout the course into your comprehensive marketing plan, including an Action Plan that specifies the key steps you’ll begin with to kick off your marketing efforts. Optional Assignment: Complete your Marketing Plan, including the action steps you’ll begin with to get your marketing underway.
